Organising Families Without Fighting Part 2.

Continuing from part 1 let’s look into the step by step process of organising families or teams of people. Just in case you arrived here without seeing Part 1 here it is Organising Families – What I learnt from a tandem kayak Part 1.

What does a kayak have to do with organising families??

More than you think. I guess it could seem a little bit more outside the box than usual, but stay with me it will be worth it. So, the metaphor I took away from a paddle on the Swan River was:
Take responsibility and perform that responsibility for one area only. Know your direction and desired outcome. Understand the areas of responsibility of the other family members, team members or partners. Discuss the plan, what each person is aiming for. Decide what will create harmony in a forward motion. With action lead the way together, everyone wins working in forward flow.

Step by Step Argument Free Organising

There are many intricate details in organising families or teams of people. Get organised with these steps, free from arguments and frustration:
  1. Discuss the responsibilities and areas you are going to get organised. Decide who has the best skills for an area, one person maybe more detailed orientated so, could be better for paperwork. Another with more technical knowledge, like knowing which toy this weird spare part belongs to. Make a commitment to the role and take responsibility. Remember you are not responsible for all of it, only your part.
  2. Once you have the responsibilities set, decide on the general direction you want to go. What is the outcome you are trying to achieve? You might be surprised that you have very different ideas about this.  Ask “what is the vision of you’re organised space?” “What is it going to look like?”
  3. Watch and guide the way as you move forward. Sometimes you need to make adjustments along the way. Is the layout of the room or system for your organising project getting you to where you want to be? Make small incremental changes along the way so that you meet the desired outcome. It pays to take a step back to look at the whole picture every once and a while.
