If you are a business owner, are in a position of leadership, or are dealing with a late diagnosis of ADHD, you may be familiar with operating from “urgency mode” and struggling with systems that don’t fit with the way you think. Difficulties with executive function, workplace burnout, and the presence of a severe inner critic can all lead you to seek out ways to find calm, work effectively, and balance work and life.

The Australian Government offers funding for workplace adjustments, including ADHD coaching, through the Employment Assistance Fund (EAF) managed by JobAccess.

Who Is Eligible for JobAccess Funding?

To qualify for JobAccess EAF funding, you must meet key eligibility criteria set by the Department of Social Services:
  • Ongoing Condition: You must have an ongoing disability or neurodivergent condition that has lasted, or is likely to last, for at least two years and substantially affects your ability to perform your employment duties.
  • Residency: You must be an Australian resident, or hold a Temporary Protection Visa (TPV) or Safe Haven Enterprise Visa (SHEV).
  • Employment Status: You must meet one of the following working criteria:
  • Be employed (or hold a written offer of employment) for a minimum of 8 hours per week for at least 13 weeks.
  • Be employed for fewer than 8 hours per week if you are actively building towards 8 hours with written employer commitment.
  • Be a self-employed worker with an active ABN who has worked at least 8 hours per week over the last 13 weeks and earned an hourly rate equivalent to or above the National Minimum Wage.

Can you apply for a job without telling your employer about your diagnosis?

Many people diagnosed later in life worry about workplace stigma or want to keep their health information private. Luckily, you can stay completely confidential during the application process.

You can submit an EAF application directly as an employee rather than having your employer lodge it. To ensure your workplace is not contacted, email JobAccess directly and state that you do not approve them contacting your employer.
You will submit all required proof of diagnosis and employment directly to your designated JobAccess coordinator.

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Apply for Funding

  1. Submit the Online Application: Access the secure online portal at www.jobaccess.gov.au. At Step 4 of the application, select Specialist Learning Disorder Support and One-on-One Support Request, entering the capped amount of \$1,770.44.

2. Protect Your Confidentiality: Send an email to JobAccess explicitly confirming that you do not approve of them contacting your employer regarding your application.

3. Receive Application Forms: Once JobAccess reviews your initial submission, they will email you documentation forms requesting proof of diagnosis, proof of employment, and a One-on-One Support Request form.

4. Choose Your Coach: Arrange an introduction call with coaches who seem like a good fit for your needs and goals. If you think I am a match, share a few details here, and we can set up a time to talk.

5. Complete Your Workplace Barriers Assessment: If you choose me as your coach, we will set up a JobAccess Workplace Barriers session. In this Zoom meeting, we will go over your executive function challenges and workplace barriers so I can fill out the support request form. Please note there is a $165 fee for this assessment and report writing.

6. Submit Final Documentation: Return the completed support request form from your coach, alongside your proof of diagnosis and employment, directly to your JobAccess coordinator.

7. Commence Coaching & Claim Reimbursement: After you get written approval, confirm your start date with your coach. Pay the first monthly fee directly to your coach, then send the tax invoice to JobAccess to get reimbursed at the end of the first month.

What Documentary Evidence Do You Need?
To support your application, you will need to gather specific evidence for JobAccess:

1. Proof of Diagnosis

You must supply a document confirming an ADHD diagnosis that impacts everyday work activities. Valid options include:
  • A standard General Practitioner (GP) report or medical certificate.
  • An Allied health practitioner report.
  • A Specialist medical report or Services Australia report (Employment Services Assessment).

2. Proof of Employment/Business

  • For Employees: A signed and dated Contract of Employment, a written offer of employment, or other official written proof showing at least 8 hours per week.
  • For Self-Employed Workers: Your Australian Business Number (ABN), records showing at least 8 hours worked per week over the past 13 weeks (such as diary entries or appointment logs), and proof of income meeting the National Minimum Wage (sales records, CPA statements, or ATO tax records). Statutory declarations are not accepted.
