Learn how to count your moments big & small for a more joyful 2024
Everyone loves the start of a week, month or year to feel like they can make a fresh start. But there’s a big missed opportunity when you are only looking forward and not looking back at the moments of progress and learning in 2023.
We all know it’s easier to remember what went wrong or what we didn’t achieve but had hoped to. Take a few moments to look at what 2023 meant to you. I’m confident you’ll see some evidence to show you what you achieved. At the least, you’ll see some of the beautiful lessons you can take into 2024.
If you are someone with ADHD, noticing the nuances and quiet achievements is even more challenging. The big signals are flashing loudly and brightly while not flashing on the things that went well. So, now you’re reading this, take this as a big flashing signal to pause and look back in that rear view mirror of 2023.
Here’s how I’m taking that peek in the rear view mirror:
- Find a few minutes of peace
- Play some binaural beats; here’s one of my favs
- Look at prompts to help think back over the year – a calendar, diary, social media feed
- Delve into any data sources for a quick look at the year – client files, website traffic, training enrolments, milestones, etc
- Make a list of gratitude and achievements from 2023
You won’t need to create a full report or get highly detailed to realise you’ve made some pretty wonderful progress and can look back with a sense of what was important to you.
My peek into the rear view mirror looks a little like this:
I’m Grateful For:
- The trust given to me by over 100 clients in 2023
- My husband, who supports me in more ways than can be counted
- Having friends who see me and believe in who I am
- Beauty and all the safety I enjoyed in 2023
My achievements and lessons learned:
- Released a new website packed with resources and support for people struggling with ADHD and organising their lives
- We hired our first full-time virtual assistant, Faith. An achievement and also lesson in essentialism (read more on essentialism here)
- I learned that over 1000 hours of coaching in a year could happen while building skills and knowledge; one leads to the other, and there’s room for more!
- I achieved and learned that this coaching journey has no end while finishing four advanced courses in ADHD coaching. ADHD Education, Neurodiversity Support and Education, Fostering Mindful Change and Core Competencies Intensive: ADHD.
- Adding another puppy to the family is both joyous and exhausting!
- I achieved my 25-year-long dream of studying music, dance and culture in Egypt.
It’s been an extraordinary year for me personally and my coaching career. This has been a long time coming, so before you start comparing, just remember not every year has so many significant landmarks to recognise. Still, it has many small ones that deserve as much celebration and recognition.
Now It’s Your Turn
